Our 100th day of school is today- Friday! (yey! what a perfect day) I've heard of 2nd grade teachers celebrating the 102nd day of school, and 1st grade celebrating the 101st, but I think the 100th day is great for us. Any of these activities can be modified to accommodate the other days if you so wish! Also, all of the activities mentioned are FREE!
Last year I did 100-themed centers all day and it worked out really well. There was a total of 8 centers and I helped run two of them. I picked the centers I wanted, and then calculated how much time would be needed for each one, minus specials, lunch, and teacher-directed PE (recess). I think each center was about 15-25 minutes. That was overly ambitious, especially in first grade, but in the end, it worked out.
This year I’m doing 5 centers, and a few more whole group activities. I’m hoping that with a new group of second graders, it’ll be even better!
The five centers for this year include the gumball machine craft (something I will definitely be manning), building with 100 cups, race to 100, build with wooden blocks, and the 100th day art project. These don’t require too many materials and I had most of them on hand. You can also change some of them to meet your needs- instead of doing wooden blocks, you could use snap cubes or foam shape manipulatives.

The whole group activities I'm doing include the 100 book challenge, brainstorming 100 things we've learned, and two writing sheets: "If I had $100..." and "When I'm 100 years old..."
I really love the idea of the 100 book challenge- the whole class does their part to read 100 books- so for us that averages about 7 books per student. We’ll include our read aloud books as well. I picked up Happy 100th Day and 100th Day Worries at the public library.
Throughout the day, brainstorming 100 things we’ve learned has me really excited. I’m curious to see how it goes- if we’ll struggle to come up with things, or if it’ll be easier than we think.
To get our writing in, we’ll be completing the “When I’m 100 years old…” page and “If I had $100…” sheet.
I feel like I did more last year, but these activities will take all day, and I’m not even sure if we’ll have enough time to finish them all! Quality > Quantity.
