Let me preface this post by saying that I do not like to go grocery shopping. I used to hate it more when I shopped at Walmart (most of the customers and staff were so unfriendly, and oftentimes, rude), but now, shopping solely at Publix, my attitude has gotten a little softer towards shopping. (this is not an advertisement for Publix, it's just my preferred grocery store) With that being said, I'd still rather be doing almost anything else. However, my shopping routine has made everything a bit more bearable.
I avoid shopping after my work day- I try to come home and relax, or save my energy to only make dinner, instead of shop and cook. I usually reserve either Saturday or Sunday morning as my shopping time- it also makes a difference for me if I go in the morning v. the afternoon. (mornings are a lot better)
I plan to cook 2-3 meals a week because we have leftovers, we might eat out once a week, and because once or twice a week I may not feel like cooking, so we'll have something super easy, like a frozen dinner or a sandwich. I try to go to the store only twice a month, but sometimes it's every week. (I'm trying to get my planning perfected so it is only twice a month)
Because of this, before I shop, I clean out my fridge and take stock of what I have. (just a quick glance with my eyes, I don't write anything down) Then, I'll use my Publix app (or visit their website on my laptop) to look at their sales and BOGOs. From that, I'll look up recipes online or on their website and transfer grocery items to my shopping list- and the list automatically places ingredients in aisle order! It makes the trip a lot easier because I've done all my planning- I know what meals we'll eat during the week, I know what ingredients I need, and I know about the sales, so I'm able to save a lot of time and stress while at the store. I like to be in and out in less than an hour. Also, when I come home with the groceries, putting them away is painless because I've already cleared out my fridge and made room.
If I'm feeling particularly lazy or in the mood for subs, one of my 'meals' will be a Publix sub for Chris and a sub for me, which lasts 2 meals for us. (And hey! One less meal to prep!) Publix simple meals does a great job of providing a bunch of diverse meals that are 30 mins or less. For example, my next two weeks of meals are:
Also, I make sure that I have extra items on hand if we don't end up going out, or we don't feel like cooking/having one of the meals- we can do sandwiches, frozen dinners, or something simple like pasta- having spaghetti and sauce sitting around is perfect, because it doesn't expire right away.
While this may not be a revolutionary post, it often helps me to see what other people's routines are, so hopefully something helped or stuck with you!
What helps you save time, money, and sanity while grocery shopping?
