Instead of sitting down one day and dedicating a block of time to purging my closet, I do a little bit each day, or a little bit every few days. Hear me out though- it's not scheduled.
Sometimes I'll feel the urge to just take a few minutes to look through my closet and put some clothes straight into the donate or sell pile. I love those moments. Most of the time I don't feel like doing that or I just have more important things to do. Instead, I evaluate outfits when I wear them. If I love it on- awesome, I'm reassured that I can keep it. If I hate it on, I obviously donate/sell it. If I'm mediocre about it, I can either spend some time thinking about it or I just know that I should get rid of it. If you are trying to be super picky about what stays and goes- then take these vague opportunities to put it in the donate/sell pile right away. If I never wear an item, then I probably know what I should do about it. If you're still on the fence, wear it; you'll usually know for sure after that.
I love Plato's Closet, Hut No. 8 and all the rest of those stores that will buy your gently used items for pennies on the dollar that you paid. (But it's still $ you didn't have before, no matter how little you get back!) I have OK luck at these consignment stores- I'll get maybe $7 for 7 items, or something to that effect, but usually they don't take that many of my items.
After hitting up these stores a few times over a few month period, whatever I have left (usually a huge reusable bag full) I'll just donate them. (It's out of my closet and hopefully into someone else's!) You could also try ThredUp.com or other online consignment stores, but they usually only take really good name brand items and I don't have super expensive pieces like that.
It feels amazing to get rid of things that you don't wear, don't love or don't need! I think it also helps when you go shopping- you're less likely to impulse buy and more likely to only purchase things you LOVE versus what's on sale or what looks good/okay.
Do you guys have any tips? How do you get rid of unwanted clothes? Let me know if this helped in any way- even if it just gave you a new perspective!
